Yoga offers us more than relief from back pain. Research has concluded that yoga can reduce the symptoms of depression.
Yoga and Depression Yoga Osom Open State of Mind
Research conducted by researchers at Harvard University in Massachusetts and Columbia University in New York concluded that practicing yoga on a weekly basis leads to a significant reduction in the symptoms of depression after twelve weeks of practice.
The improvement that was observed was even greater for those who practiced yoga three times a week compared to those who practiced yoga twice a week.
In the survey participated 30 people who practiced breathing exercises as well as Iyengar yoga with emphasis on precision and alignment. The eleven participants were diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and either received a constant dose of antidepressants for 3 months or were not taking medication.
After twelve weeks, the symptoms of depression decreased in both groups of practitioners with the greatest difference in those who practiced yoga three times a week.
